ATI General Membership

Anyone with an interest in the Alexander Technique and the aims of ATI can join and become a General Member. All members may vote and hold ATI offices.

ATI Trainee Membership

ATI acknowledges that people train in a variety of ways. We foster a sense of belonging to a worldwide community from the very beginning of a trainee's journey. Thus 'Trainee membership' in ATI is available to all trainees in any Alexander Technique training program throughout the world, regardless of whether their director of training is a member of ATI or not.

Because ATI recognizes that trainees incur substantial costs to train, we would like to offer benefits of full ATI membership at the substantially reduced rate of $30. Once a trainee has qualified to teach, if they elect to sustain their ATI membership, they would pay the normal teaching member rate of $135, (US), per year.

Trainee membership includes voting rights, receiving the ATI membership Directory, the ExChange journal three times a year, the e-communiqué, and the additional benefit of a 50% reduction in the AGM conference fee.

Please note that for Trainee membership status, proof of training is required. Also, proof of a record of termination or graduation from any given training program is necessary when applying for a teaching membership. Please contact, the ATI-USA Office for additional information.

ATI Teaching Membership

List of ATI Recognized Societies:

As of this date the ATI membership at has voted to officially recognize the 'affiliated' societies: STAT (UK), PAAT (UK), NASTAT (USA), AuSTAT (Australia), CanSTAT (Canada), SVLAT (Switzerland), GLAT (Germany), DEFLAT (Denmark), SASTAT (South Africa), ISTAT (Israel), ISATT (Ireland), AEFMAT (Belgium), AFPTA (France), ABTA (Brazil), etc.) as well as ATN (the Alexander Teaching Network). Thus, anyone holding a certificate or teaching membership in one of these societies is eligible to become an ATI Teaching Member, although this route does NOT provide an ATI Teaching Certificate.

To become a Teaching Member of ATI a teacher must complete one of the following paths:
  1. Be assessed by and obtain the written sponsorship of three duly elected ATI Sponsoring Members. Anyone wishing to become an ATI Teaching Member and gain an ATI Teaching Certificate must follow this route.
  2. Or, hold a certificate from or be a teaching member of another recognized Alexander professional society. Anyone becoming an ATI Teaching Member through this route does NOT receive an ATI Teaching Certificate. In order to receive an ATI certificate one must go through the ATI Sponsorship Process described above.

ATI Sponsoring Membership

The Sponsoring Members are ATI Teaching Members who have been nominated and elected by the membership. These Sponsors have the experience to evaluate the competency and qualifications of those who apply to become teaching members.

Sponsoring Members have had extensive experience in teaching the Alexander Technique in a variety of responsible roles, such as:

  • Directors of Alexander Technique training programs
  • Experienced senior faculty on training courses
  • Experienced in training teachers and very experienced working in private practice.

In October 2000 by vote of the membership, ATI Criteria were created for evaluating the competency of teachers. ATI sponsors use these criteria to evaluate candidates for ATI certification. The study of the Alexander Technique is a life long process, which is characterized by continual learning, awareness, and self-development. Teachers certified by Alexander Technique International are committed to continually improving their understanding of the Technique and refining their use of the Technique and their teaching skills. These criteria are intended to establish a starting point for beginning teachers. ATI will address the questions of continuing education, re-certification and opportunities for expanding personal and collective knowledge of the Alexander Technique and it's teaching at a future date.

We are currently engaged in establishing how we will implement the newly adopted ATI Criteria. The outcome will determine how sponsors are chosen, re-approved, and how they will be required to Sponsor candidates.
