The Alexander Technique as an Adjunct to Psychotherapy: Inhibition as a Tool for Managing EmotionsIn working to address problems of anxiety, stress, trauma, addiction, compulsive behavior and other psychological problems, clients need help in dealing with the overwhelming intensity of strong emotional responses. The Alexander Technique can provide an important tool in this task, helping students focus on the kinaesthesia of their emotions as part of a whole-body awareness. The practice of inhibition also can be used as a way to stop acting out habitual, dysfunctional impulses to try to make the feelings go away. In this session, Joel Ziff, Ed.D., a psychologist and Alexander Teacher, provided an overview of the use of the Alexander Technique as an adjunct to psychotherapy, discussing how to structure the work so that it is constructive and appropriate, and suggesting possibilities for building a working relationship with mental health professionals.

David Gorman:
A Spring-Loaded Suspension System By Any Other Name...Tensegrity has become a buzzword in some fields of physiology in the last few years. In this workshop, David explores the model of human functioning he discovered back in 1982 and compares it to the above presentations. His model reveals our design as inherently integrated creatures securely grounded and fully organized for free, effortless movement. According to this model, muscles don't hold us up nor contract to move us, but act as sensitive detectors of instability and respond by suspending us in an elastic web of adjustable support that follows us around, springing us into activity. The model shows that when we interfere with this natural integration, we become divided into parts (creating separate mind and body) and inevitably end up with chronic pain, tension, and joint damage, strains and other organic problems.

Tensegrity and BiomechanicsDr. Levine contrasted the old compression, or pillar, model of the spine with the far more dynamic and useful one offered by tensegrity. Using this model, he has changed his clinical approach to back care from surgical to nonsurgical and noninvasive. He clearly got the message across that the old model is literally unsupportable.
